How to manage generator loading
- Measure real operating kW or current instead of guessing from connected appliances.
- Choose a generator that can handle the largest starting step without being vastly oversized for normal demand.
- Sequence loads so motors do not all start together.
- Follow the model manual for minimum loading, warm-up, cool-down and duty.
- Use planned load testing and service when a standby diesel unit normally carries little load.
Common mistakes
- Buying the largest generator available without building a load list.
- Letting a diesel generator idle for long periods to keep it ready.
- Adding load after a breaker trips without finding the cause.
- Treating maximum power as the normal continuous load.
- Using smoke alone to diagnose load without measurements and service checks.
