What the three names mean

Advantages and limitations
Recoil start has fewer electrical parts and can work when the starting battery is flat or absent. It is useful for compact machines and remote sites, but it may be difficult for some users and larger diesel engines.
Electric start is faster and easier for frequent starts, emergency backup and users who cannot pull a recoil rope strongly. It adds a battery, starter motor, solenoid, switch and cables that can fail if ignored.
Some generators include both systems. Recoil backup is helpful, but only if the engine design and operating condition allow it to be started manually.
Which starting system should you choose?
- Choose recoil for simple, occasional operation when the user can start it safely.
- Choose electric or key start for frequent use, larger engines, urgent backup or easier operation.
- For automatic transfer or remote start, confirm a compatible control system. A key-start generator alone is not automatically ATS-ready.
- Consider who will operate the generator, not only the purchase price.
Keep an electric-start generator ready
- Inspect battery terminals for looseness and corrosion.
- Keep the battery charged according to the generator and battery instructions.
- Use short starting attempts and allow the starter to cool between attempts.
- Do not keep cranking when the engine has a fuel, oil or mechanical fault.
